Introduction

As the 20th century comes to an end, the International Association of  Women (IAW) has decided to create a Hall of Fame.  Each year countries will be able to submit the names of worthy candidates. Only women who have made significant contributions to their country or the world in general will be considered. The women inducted into the IAW Hall of Fame
will serve as role-models for women around the world.

This year Argentina has submitted the name of Eva Duarte Perón. After preliminary screening, she has been selected as a finalist.  There are 50 finalists.  Only 20 of these worthy women will be inducted into the Hall  of Fame this year.



 
Task

The IAW has organized several committees to investigate each of the 50 women.  Your committee has been charged with researching Eva Duarte Perón’s life.  This is a very important task.  Evita Perón is a controversial figure.  Your committee will prepare a report of your findings that is balanced and based in fact, not fiction.  This report must include a recommendation to the IAW regarding Perón’s induction.  Remember that the criteria for selection is that the woman must have made a significant contribution to her country or the world and be considered a role-model for women of the world.  More than one committee has been assigned to research Evita Perón’s life.  Be prepared to defend your group's position in Spanish in a discussion with the other groups researching her life.  Your report will be used as the basis of a written and video press release.

Process

* You will be assigned to a committee by your teacher.

* The first task your committee has is to complete the "Fact versus Fiction" WebQuest. Click on the following URL, and follow the directions on the screen. (http://www.plainfield.k12.in.us/hschool/webq/webq7/mcfadden.htm)

* Research Evita Perón’s life using the resources supplied above.  For Internet resources click on the URLs provided to go directly to the site. Complete one research form for each resource used.

* Consider the questions from the "Fact versus Fiction" WebQuest as you use the different resources.  These questions apply to Internet resources as well as other resources.

* After completing your research, answer the following questions:

    1.  Has Perón made a significant contribution to the country of Argentina
    and/or the world?

    2.  What is/are the contribution(s) she has made?  Be specific!

    3.  What characteristic(s) did she possess that would make her a good
    role-model for women?  Be specific!

    4.  Based on the information you found, do you believe that Evita Perón is
    worthy of the IAW Hall of Fame?  Why or why not? Be specific!

* Your committee will create a report of your findings in Spanish.  This report should summarize her life and your reasons for approving or denying her induction into the IAW Hall of Fame.  This may be done in outline form.  Make sure you have answered all of the questions above.

* Write a press release in Spanish stating your group's decision and the reasons for your decision.  Your reasons should include specific examples from the resources you used.  The IAW will use this press release when it announces to the world this years inductees.

* Create a video press release of 60 to 90 seconds in duration stating your group's decision and the reasons for your decision. Your reasons should include specific examples.  The IAW will use this press release when it announces to the world this years inductees.


Evaluation

You will be evaluated through three performances: a report in outline form, a written press release and a video press release.  The outline and video press release will be group projects.  The written press release will be an individual evaluation.
 

Report (outline)

The report of your findings should be an outline of your ideas in Spanish.  In this report summarize her life and your reasons for approving or denying Evita Perón’s induction into the IAW Hall of Fame.  Your group will be evaluated on your ability to synthesize the information, distinguish between fact and fiction and evaluate the nominee using the IAW criteria for induction.  This report will be the basis of your group's oral presentation.  It may be necessary for you to defend your point of view during the discussion.
 

Written Press Release

The written press release should be at least 100 words in Spanish.  Each student will write a press release using the outline the group created and the template for writing newspaper articles.  In the press release you will announce to the world your group's decision.  It will be necessary for you to explain the group's decision citing specific examples.  You should include a "catchy" headline. You will be evaluated with the writing rubric for this course.
 

Video Press Release

The video press release should be between 60 to 90 seconds in duration.  This video should demonstrate to the world why your group decided to induct or not induct Evita Perón. Your reasons should include specific examples. You will be evaluated with a rubric.

Conclusion

After completing this WebQuest students will have researched the life of Evita Perón.  They will have had an opportunity to read and critically analyze some of the information available about her.  Their final decision will be determined based on facts about her life.
